Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the level of stigma dimensions and social stigma against people with mental illness among groups, consisting of 142 police officers, 144 social welfare service providers and 144 general population. All respondents were asked about the controllability, visibility, prejudice and discrimination against people with mental illness. The major findings are, first, with respect to controllability and visibility, there were no differences among the three groups. Second, in terms of social stigma, police officers were significantly higher in inability, dangerousness, and social distance than social welfare service providers at a similar level of general population. But they were lower in deprivation of rights than the general population at a similar level of social welfare service providers. Based on these findings, this study suggests alternatives to reduce stigma.
